Creative Christmas Decorations

With Christmas right around the corner, it’s time to finish putting up all your holiday decorations! If you’re looking for some simple yet chic Christmas decorations this year, why not consider making your own? These unique ideas don’t take much time but are sure to earn you rave reviews!

Pine boughs

Get some leftover pine boughs from a Christmas tree farm (many places will just let you have them for free) and then create some decorative boughs for the fireplace! You can decorate the pine boughs in a variety of ways. For instance, you could spray paint them silver and gold. (Spray paint them in the backyard over an old sheet so you don’t get unwanted paint everywhere.) Or you could add red holly berries and tiny burlap bows to the boughs. No matter what you do, it’s a simple way to add instant holiday spirit to your mantle.

Gifts

Wrap some empty boxes of varying sizes in vintage-inspired wrapping paper and add a burlap bow or red ribbon. Place the gifts around the house for a classy Christmas look!

Quotes

Buy an old-fashioned chalkboard. Throughout the weeks leading up to Christmas, periodically update it with classic Christmas quotes. You can also practice calligraphy if you want to do something truly original! (It’s also the perfect place to leave a note for Santa!)

Joyful Pillows:

You can instantly add holiday charm to store-bought pillows with just a few easy steps. Type “JOY” into your word-processing document using a font you like. Enlarge each character until it is a full letter page size, and then print out the pages.

Cut out the letters and trace them onto white felt. Next, cut the letters out of the felt. Pin strips of fusible bonding web to the back of each felt letter. Center each one on a pillowcase and then gently remove the pins. Follow the package instructions to iron on the letters. This is a simple way to dress up a room without spending too much time on a project. And you can easily make other pillows that say other things for decorations throughout the rest of the year!

Candy Cane Decorations

There are countless ways to incorporate candy canes into your holiday decorations! Better Homes and Gardens has a host of decorating ideas, including a spread of candy cane inspired decorations! You won't want to miss out on these cheery, colourful decorations.

Personalized Wreath

Create a treasured family keepsake in the form of a wreath! Hot-glue black-and-white photos of your family to a wire wreath form. This is a fun wreath that can be hung up year-round if you want. It's also a great gift idea.

Wreath

Looking for a unique wreath for your front door? Make a yarn wreath! Wrap different sizes of Styrofoam balls and a Styrofoam wreath form with coloured yarn. Then use a glue gun to glue the balls onto the form. If you're hanging your masterpiece outdoors once you're finished, spray it with a protective finish so that it can weather the elements.

And remember that you don't have to limit wreaths to Christmassy items. You can make a pine wreath and then adding your favourite elements, from seashells to vintage cameras. Even if it’s not traditionally thought to be a “Christmas” item, it can be a fun way to showcase your interests and highlight your personality!
